I didn’t expect much going into Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The prior trilogy of films, which began in 2000, were critical failures. For those who may still hold some resentment toward those films, take heart: 2023’s attempt to bring the magic of the iconic tabletop RPG to the silver screen is a rousing success.
Filled with sharp one-liners and beautifully retro practical effects, Honor Among Thieves leans full-tilt into the sillier aspects of Dungeons and Dragons. Long time fans will delight in the litany of references to canon and lore, while those less seasoned in the ways of magic and mystery will find an accessible action-fantasy film that could easily become a gateway down the rabbit hole. Our Chris Pine-led merry band of travelers remain consistently entertaining throughout the well-paced two hours, and several surprise cameos reveal some of Hollywood’s favorites as true nerds at heart.
A truly fun fantasy romp overflowing with style and substance, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves rolls a natural 20. Check it out.
